The long-awaited groundbreaking for the Restoration Phase of the #4 Locomotive Project will take place on Sunday, October 26, at 2:00 p.m. Please join us as we celebrate this major milestone!
The event will take place at the site where Locomotive #4 is on display, at the corner of East Lauridsen Boulevard and South Chase Street, directly across from the Port Angeles Library (2210 S. Peabody Street).
The groundbreaking will include a short program sharing the story of the project, a look at the future plans, and a few words from the project team and local partners. After the program, guests will witness the ceremonial groundbreaking, marking the official start of construction. Visitors will also find informational displays and graphics showing what’s coming next and team members will be on hand to answer questions.
A special treat will be the appearance of a working miniature steam locomotive — a small-scale version of Rayonier’s #70, which once ran on the company’s rail line. The engine will be steamed up and running along a short stretch of track during the event.
The #4 Locomotive Project is a community-driven effort to preserve and celebrate Port Angeles’ industrial and rail heritage. By restoring historic Locomotive #4 and developing a public park around it, the project honors the region’s past while creating a lasting, educational, and family-friendly landmark for future generations.
The Restoration Phase will include rust removal, metal repair, priming, painting, and making the locomotive look like new. In addition, a shelter will be built over top of the locomotive to protect it from rain.
