[ARCHIVED] Residents Encouraged to Participate in Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drill, October 17

On October 17, 2024 at 10:17 a.m., millions of people will participate in Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drills by practicing Drop, Cover, and Hold On, and other protective actions that reduce earthquake injuries.

Earthquakes can happen anywhere you live, work, or travel. The Great ShakeOut is an opportunity to prepare for and practice how we protect ourselves during an earthquake event. The goal is to prevent a major earthquake from becoming a catastrophic event for you and your family, your organization, and our community.

In conjunction with the Great ShakeOut, the county-wide All Hazard Alert Broadcast (AHAB) tsunami siren will be tested at 10:17 a.m. on October 17, using the actual siren wail sound. This is just a test.

We encourage you and your family to register at ShakeOut.org/register to practice and improve your level of earthquake safety. Registration is simple and only takes a couple of minutes. All registered participants will:

  • Learn what you can do to get prepared
  • Receive ShakeOut news and other earthquake information
  • Be counted in the largest earthquake drill ever
  • Set an example that motivates others to participate
