[ARCHIVED] UPDATED - City to Begin Seasonal Float Removal After Labor Day

Parks and Recreation Update

Updated, Posted September 20, 2024:

In response to feedback from our fishing community, the Parks & Recreation Department has extended the float availability at the Ediz Hook Boat Launch through the end of September. This extension ensures continued access during the fishing season, while allowing us to protect our infrastructure.

In early October, five of the most vulnerable floats will be temporarily removed from the Ediz Hook Boat Launch (date of removal is weather-dependent). These floats will be safely stored over the winter months and reinstalled in Spring 2025.

Five floats will remain installed at the facility.

This proactive measure follows damage sustained from last year’s winter storm and is essential to protecting our remaining infrastructure. We appreciate your understanding as we continue to work towards a long-term solution to ensure year-round float availability at Ediz Hook.

Original News Flash, Posted August 30, 2024:

The days are shorter, the air is cooler, and autumn is on its way. With the changing of the seasons, the Parks & Recreation Department will be removing the floating docks from City Pier on September 13, 2024. This work is performed each year after Labor Day to prevent storm damage caused by seasonal changes in wind and storm patterns. The floats will be safely stored and returned to the City Pier for Memorial Day Weekend in 2025.

In previous years, leaving the floats in place through the fall season has led to significant damage and prolonged repairs lasting over a year. By removing them in September, the City is taking proactive steps to ensure the floats will be in good condition and ready for use next year.

As a precautionary measure, the Parks & Recreation Department will also temporarily remove the floating docks from the Ediz Hook Boat Launch on September 23, 2024. This action follows damage sustained by the floats during last year’s winter storm and is essential to protecting our remaining infrastructure. We appreciate your understanding as we continue to work towards a long-term solution to ensure year-round float availability at Ediz Hook.

We enjoyed serving you this season and look forward to welcoming you back next spring! For more information, please contact the Parks & Recreation Department at (360) 417-4550 or parksandrecreation@cityofpa.us.
