The City of Port Angeles with TITAN Earthwork, LLC, will soon begin the Signal Controller Upgrade Project (TR0120) in downtown Port Angeles. The work, scheduled to begin April 22 and continue through December, will implement significant safety upgrades and improve traffic flow along the First and Front Street Corridor.

“This project represents an important coordinated step forward in pedestrian accessibility and responsive traffic flow improvements along this critical transportation corridor,” says City Engineer Jonathan Boehme.

Work will involve the replacement of outdated signal timing equipment with modern, traffic-centric software proven to reduce collisions, improve emergency vehicle detection, and increase pedestrian safety.

As part of this project, the City will install accessible pedestrian signals, including audible signal actuators and visual countdown signal heads. These new devices will activate and sound only when called for by pedestrians through a modern push-button system. Additionally, the City will construct over 50 ADA-compliant curb ramps along the First and Front Street Corridor between Oak Street and Del Guzzi Drive.

Construction will take place at 13 intersections, beginning at the following three locations:

  • Race & Front Streets
  • Race & First Streets
  • Peabody & First Streets

While traffic delays are expected, the City will work to minimize disruptions to traffic flow and pedestrian access in the project area.

Typical project working hours will be Monday through Thursday from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. During these times, travelers can expect temporary closures of street crossing and sidewalks, with both traffic and pedestrian detours in place. Traffic Control Flaggers will be onsite to direct commuters through the construction area.

The Signal Controller Upgrade Project is fully funded through a Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) Highway Safety Improvement Program Grant in the amount of $5,654,520.
