[ARCHIVED] City to Launch “City Shade” Free Street Tree Planting Program!

City Shade

The City is proud to announce the launch of the “City Shade” Street Tree Program, an initiative developed by community member Paul Forrest in partnership with the City of Port Angeles. As part of this program, residents of Port Angeles will soon be eligible to receive free trees for planting both at private properties and within the City right-of-way.

The City Shade Program aims to increase the tree canopy in our community by planting trees in low, medium and high-density residential neighborhoods. This strategic initiative supports the growth of our urban forest and aligns with the City’s long-term sustainability and Climate Resiliency Plan goals.

Approximately 100 trees grown at the City Shade Nursery will be available for planting in October 2023. The species available include English Oak (Quercus robur), Golden Rain (Koelreutaria paniculata) and Japanese Pagoda Tree (Styphnolobium japonicum).

In August, the City will open the 2023 City Shade Application Period, during which City residents can apply for free street trees. Those interested may also apply to volunteer with or donate to the program. Volunteer opportunities include participation in tree-planting events, coordinating neighborhood street tree maintenance, and helping out at the City Shade Nursery.

Upcoming Workshops and Events

To ensure the success of the program, the City has partnered with the Washington State Department of Natural Resources to host a community workshop on September 16, 2023. Attendees will learn tree-planting and maintenance techniques from experts, connect with like-minded individuals, and contribute directly to the growth of our urban forest.

Additionally, the City of Port Angeles invites residents to attend the inaugural City Shade Street Tree Community Planting on October 14, 2023! More details are soon to be announced.
