Press Release: City of Port Angeles Welcomes New Council Member

Port Angeles, WA – Please join the City of Port Angeles in welcoming Jon Hamilton to the Port Angeles City Council. On Tuesday, September 2, the City Council appointed Jon Hamilton to fill vacated Council Position No. 7 through the remainder of the unexpired term.

Mr. Hamilton will take office immediately after his oath of office has been conducted and serve until the results of the November 2027 General Election have been certified.

Jon has lived and worked in Port Angeles since 2010. He currently serves as Vice President of the Port Angeles Education Association, where he represents over 175 educators in collective bargaining, contract oversight, and policy advocacy. During his career, he has engaged directly with elected officials in Olympia and Washington, D.C. to advocate for working families and public education. Jon is a Port Angeles High School mathematics teacher, and during his 15 years as an educator, he has developed and implemented standards-based curriculum tailored to meet individual learning needs. He actively supports student academic growth and postsecondary readiness through inclusive and collaborative instruction. Jon has a B.A in Secondary Mathematics Education from Central Washington University a M.A. in Science Education from Western Governors University.

In his letter of intent, submitted along with his application and resume, Mr. Hamilton shared, “As a long-time resident, educator, parent, and active civic leader, I am deeply invested in the well-being of our community and believe I can offer collaborative, transparent, and service-driven leadership during this important moment of our city”.

Position No. 7 became vacant earlier this summer when Council member Brendan Meyer announced their resignation. After noticing the vacancy, the City Council received nine valid applications for the position. Of those applications, the Council selected three candidates for interviews during the September 2 meeting: Laurel Cripe, Jon Hamilton, and Christy Holy. Following interviews, the Council voted unanimously to appoint Jon Hamilton to the vacant position.

The appointment installs Jon Hamilton to serve as Council member until the results of the November 2027 General Election have been certified. In the 2027 election, a person will be elected to Position No.7 by the voters of Port Angeles. Jon Hamilton will be sworn in prior to the September 16, 2025 meeting. Date and time are still yet to be determined. Port Angeles City Council meetings are held on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of each month at the City Hall Council Chambers. Meetings are conducted in a hybrid format. Members of the public are welcome to participate in person or virtually via WebEx.
