[ARCHIVED] Community Survey: City Seeks Input on Pedestrian Improvements on First and Front Streets

Public Input: Submit Your Feedback

The City of Port Angeles is inviting residents to participate in a community survey as part of the First and Front Streets Pedestrian Enhancement Project (TR0222), an initiative designed to improve pedestrian and cyclist safety along the busy First and Front Street Corridor.

This corridor is among the most active in Port Angeles, serving as a key transportation route for pedestrians, cyclists, motorists and public transit users alike. With its high traffic volume and diverse range of travelers, ensuring safer and more accessible streets is a top priority.

The survey seeks input from residents on the challenges they face when crossing First and Front Streets, whether on foot, by bicycle, or using a mobility device. Feedback will help City staff and consultants to determine the most effective safety measures, or “crossing treatments,” at eight intersections along the corridor. Possible treatments include, but are not limited to, rapid flashing beacons, curb extensions, advanced signage, and channelization.

Based on a preliminary study, a total of eight intersections have been proposed for improvements:

  1. West Front Street Midblock (South Oak and South Laurel Streets)
  2. West Front Street Midblock (South Laurel and South Lincoln Streets)
  3. West First Street Midblock (South Oak and South Laurel Streets)
  4. West First Street Midblock (South Laurel and South Lincoln Streets)
  5. East Front and South Albert Streets
  6. East First and South Albert Streets
  7. East Front and South Chambers Streets
  8. East First and South Chambers Streets

The design phase of this project will begin in 2025, following a study of existing conditions by consultants and based on the community feedback received. Construction is expected to begin in Spring 2026.

The First and Front Street Pedestrian Enhancements Project is fully grant-funded by the Washington State Department of Transportation Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP), with a total project cost of $1.28 million.
