[ARCHIVED] Construction Notice: Downtown Tree and Sidewalk Replacement Project

City Project Information (General)

The City of Port Angeles, with contractor Interwest Construction Inc., has resumed work on the Downtown Tree and Sidewalk Replacement Project (TR0918 in the Capital Facilities Plan). This project is designed to eliminate trip hazards along pedestrian facilities and beautify the downtown area. Work includes repairs to settled brick pavers, concrete curbs and ramps, sidewalks, and tree wells. In addition, overgrown street trees that are causing damage to the sidewalk will be replaced.

Project Focus Areas

Construction began in April 2024, with the original contract focused on areas with the greatest need for repair. This included the elimination of trip hazards on portions of Front Street, Oak Street, Laurel Street and Railroad Avenue. To date, sidewalk replacement has been completed in these locations.

After work began, additional areas in need of repair were identified, specifically along Front Street between Lincoln and Peabody Streets, as well as other downtown locations where trip hazards were found.  On October 1, 2024, the Port Angeles City Council approved a construction change order in the amount of $42,542 to expand the scope of the project and address these hazards.

What You Can Expect: October 22-25, 2024

On Tuesday, October 22, crews will begin work to replace existing sidewalk on Front Street between Lincoln and Peabody Streets (see map below). During work hours (7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.) one lane of Front Street will be closed to traffic. Motorists should be prepared for a lane shift and follow all traffic signage.

The sidewalk adjacent to Front Street (between Lincoln and Peabody Streets) will be closed during this work and is expected to reopen on Friday, October 25.

Please note: This work schedule is tentative and subject to change based on weather.

This project will continue through November 2024, including the planting of new trees. Updated project information will be shared as work progresses.  To learn more about the Downtown Tree and Sidewalk Replacement, please visit the City Projects Webpage.
