The Observation Tower was closed on November 21, 2023, after findings from a maintenance inspection revealed significant structural concerns that posed serious safety risks. Structural repairs began in April 2024 and included the replacement of four column supports and all connections between the wood piling and tower structure; a partial replacement of the wood decking; paint removal and containment, and a full recoating of the tower structure. The City contracted with Rognlin’s Inc. of Aberdeen, Washington, to perform this highly specialized work.
“This project was a significant undertaking, and we appreciate the community’s patience throughout,” says City Manager Nathan A. West. “We are thrilled to see the tower standing tall once again and look forward to welcoming back both residents and visitors.”
The City Council approved the use of lodging tax funds in the amount of $674,464 for structural repairs of the tower, as recommended by the Lodging Tax Advisory Committee.
“I am very grateful to staff, our contractor, and the Lodging Tax Advisory Committee. Their efforts have ensured the tower will once again provide stunning views of our environment and the working waterfront for all to enjoy,” says Mayor Kate Dexter.
