The City of Port Angeles is thrilled to launch the second year of the City Shade Street Tree Program! Developed by community member Paul Forrest in partnership with the City, this program aims to enhance our community’s tree canopy by planting trees in low-, medium-, and high-density residential neighborhoods.
As part of this program, residents are invited to apply online to request up to four free street trees. These trees will be strategically planted within the public right-of-way (typically between the sidewalk and curb), to beautify our neighborhoods and support the health of our local environment.
This year’s tree distribution and planting event will be held on October 19. Approximately 230 trees grown at the City Shade Nursery will be available, including the Scarlet Oak/American Red Oak (Quercus coccinea); Katsura Tree (Cercidiphyllum japonicum); and Garry Oak (Quercus garryana), a native species.
Trees will be approximately one inch in diameter at four inches above the base, roughly six feet tall, and arrive in a #5 nursery pot. Planting will be completed by the applicant, who may request assistance from City Shade Volunteers in advance. Weekly watering during the first two summers, pruning and leaf raking will also be the applicant’s responsibility.
Apply Now – Receive Up to Four Free Street Trees and/or Become a Program Volunteer!
Those interested can submit an online application now through September 6. City staff will work with applicants to identify areas that would benefit from additional trees and offer species appropriate for that location’s size and soil conditions.
In addition, community members can apply to become a volunteer with the program. Volunteers will play a vital role in supporting tree planting efforts, including helping out at the City Shade Nursery and assisting with tree distribution and planting on October 19.
