[ARCHIVED] Downtown Tree and Sidewalk Replacement Project to begin April 1st

City Project Information (General)

The City of Port Angeles with contractor ICI Construction is scheduled to begin the Downtown Tree & Sidewalk Replacement Project (TR0918) on April 1st. The goals of this project are to enhance pedestrian safety by eliminating trip hazards while also beautifying the downtown area.

This project will involve the replacement of outgrown trees that are lifting walkways, as well as the repair of tree wells, curb ramps, and portions of sidewalk on Front Street, Oak Street, Laurel Street, and Railroad Avenue. Work areas have been selected based on locations that have experienced the greatest settlement between brick pavers and concrete sidewalks, or that have been affected by tree roots heaving sidewalks and tree boxes.

Outgrown trees will be carefully removed and recycled into mulch at the ICI Construction Facility. New trees, which are less likely to cause sidewalk lifting issues, will be planted in their place. This includes species such as the Armstrong Maple, the Bowhall Maple, and the Chancellor Littleleaf Linden.

Work is scheduled to begin on April 1st and estimated to be complete in June. During this time, residents and visitors are advised to use caution and follow any detour or safety instructions provided.

To minimize disruptions to vehicle and pedestrian traffic, tree removal work will take place at night from Monday, April 1st, through Friday, April 5th. This work will begin at approximately 12 a.m. and is expected to conclude at 8 a.m. each day. ICI Construction will separately notify all affected downtown businesses and residents prior to April 1st.
