Tall Ships visit Port Angeles Port Angeles was able to enjoy several days of pirates and tall ships when three of these vessels visted our harbor. These ships joined about 30 other rigged sailing ships in Victoria and then traveled on to Tacoma.
City residents took on-board tours and also enjoyed various events around the city. We look forward to their next visit!

Arts In Action Festival & Sand Sculpture Contest is Huge Success! On July 23rd and 24th, 2005, the Nor'Wester Rotary of Port Angeles hosted the only sand sculpture competition of its kind in Washington state.
Nine world-champion sand sculptors from across America and Canada competed for prize money in the Windermere Masters Sand Sculpture Classic, held in conjunction with the service club's annual Arts in Action street fair.
The Arts in Action Festival began at the City Pier with live music and select vendors. Over 50 area artisans displayed their wares and many gave demonstrations of how they do their artwork. Along with continuous live music; there was a car show each day of the event featuring the Porsche Club and a local Street Rod show. Chad Springfield's 1968 Camaro won the People's Choice Award. Activities included a dance on Saturday evening, food vendors, and demonstrations by members of the Clallam Art League at the Landing Mall.
The sand sculpture competition was by invitation only and was begun three years ago. The sculptors must have won at least one international award for their talents in order to qualify. Every year, more artists have been invited. This year's artists were:
Lucinda Wierenga; a.k.a. “Sandy Feet” and Fred Mallet from South Padre Island, Texas
Carl Jara from Cleveland, Ohio
Meridith Corson and Dan Doubleday from St. Petersburg, Florida
Barry Swires from Kelso, Washington
Vern Cooley from Seattle, Washington
Damon Langois and Fred Dobbs from Victoria, British Columbia, Canada.
Internationally-recognized sculptor and multiple world-record holder Charlie Beaulieu of
Indianola, Washington was in attendance to carve two display sculptures for the event.
Each sculptor was given ten yards of high-silt sand trucked in for the event, the necessary forms, and water for their creation. They had seventeen hours to complete a sculpture that adheres to the competition's theme, being “Legends, Fantasy, and Myths,” submitted by a local ten-year-old girl during the theme contest held in April of this year. Meredith Corson of Treasure Island, Florida won the People's Choce Award for "Fountain of Magic"
The Nor'Wester Rotary Arts in Action festival is sponsored by the service club and area merchants. It is produced to bring art appreciation to the community. The local Windermere Real Estate office is the major contributor to the sand sculpture competition; although other area businesses sponsor the individual artists. This is the fortieth year for
the festival.
