CITY PIER WORK/REPAIRS
January 9, 2012 -
Work to replace a section of the City Pier's fire suppression system will begin on Tuesday, January 10, 2012. The contractor, Viking Automatic Sprinkler Company, will fence off an area in the west portion of the Pier for storage of equipment. The viewing tower, Feiro Marine Life Center, playground, and public restrooms will remain open.
The project will replace the west sprinkler system of the Pier's overall fire suppression system. This section had reached the end of its useful life expectancy. Work is expected to extend through March 5, 2012.
Please note that dates may change, and work extended depending on weather, progress and conditions.
NEW PARK POLICIES - CITY PIER AREA Posted July 1, 2011 - In response to increasing problems with youth congregating in the playground area adjacent to the City Pier, the City has decided to take several actions to address the situation. A new park policy was approved this week that will prohibit the use of public playground equipment by children over 12 years of age. This follows a recommendation of the National Playground Safety Institute. Older kids that have been using the playground equipment in this area represent a safety hazard that this policy will help address.
A second new park policy prohibits smoking in any area within 100 feet of a public playground area. Many youth have been smoking in the area around the City Pier playground. This is a health problem and not conducive to the enjoyment of the playground by other park users.

In addition to these actions, the City has completed repairs to cameras in the area around the playground so the Police Department can monitor activity. Repairs were completed at a minimal cost to the City since there are plans to replace these cameras in the next year with funding from a $200,000 grant that will soon be available to the City.
The final action that the City plans is for one police officer to be fully dedicated to the City Pier area effective today at 4:00 p.m. The officer will stay in this area until at least 8:30 p.m., and longer if necessary. This coverage will be repeated this weekend. Additional coverage will be considered after the weekend if problems continue. The area around the Red Lion Hotel and the City Pier is important for both local citizens and visitors to enjoy without experiencing problems. The City will do everything legally possible to ensure safe and convenient access to this area.

Art Feiro Marine Lab The Feiro Marine Life Center is located at the City Pier. Named after the late Arthur D. Feiro, the center is now a cooperative effort between Peninsula College and the City of Port Angeles.
After more than a decade of planning, fund raising, and hard work by the community, the Marine Life Center first opened its doors in the fall of 1981.
There are hundreds of intertidal creatures, fishes, aquatic plant life, and many "dry" displays to enjoy. Always popular is the unique horse-shoe shaped Touch Tank.
Visiting hours vary seasonally. For a complete schedule of events, fee information, and hours of operation, contact the Center at 417-6254.
